Nanoparticles boost Solar Cell Efficiency by 60%

Octillion Corp. has announced that a published research study has demonstrated that the same silicon nanoparticles used in development of the company’s first-of-its-kind transparent glass window capable of generating electricity, are able to drastically increase the power performance of conventional silicon solar cells.

IREC Publishes Updated ‘Connecting to the Grid’ Guide

The Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) has published a new edition of its Connecting to the Grid guide. The fifth edition of this guide, published in July 2007, addresses new and lingering interconnection issues relevant to all distributed generation (DG) technologies, including renewables, fuel cells, microturbines and reciprocating engines. Because interconnection issues remain largely in the domain of the states, the guide has been designed for state regulators and other policymakers, utilities, industry representatives and consumers interested in the development of state-level interconnection standards.

New Mexico Sets New Goals for Specific Renewable Power Sources

A new rule from the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) has established specific targets for various renewable power sources that utilities must meet in achieving the state’s renewable energy requirement. Solar power is targeted at a minimum figure of 20% by the year 2011.

DARPA-Funded Effort Achieves New Record Solar Cell Efficiency

barnetthonsberglg.jpgIn late July, a consortium led by the University of Delaware (UD) announced that it has created a solar cell that can convert 42.8% of the sunlight that hits it into electricity, besting a record set by Spectrolab and DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in December 2007.

U.S. Dept. of Energy awards co-op. agreement for reducing solar costs

United Solar Ovonic LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. , announced today that it has been awarded a cost-shared, three-year cooperative agreement by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the development of low-cost building-integrated photovoltaic systems.  Funding is being provided as part of the DOE’s Solar America Initiative.

Plans for 1 MW Colorado Solar Park Move Forward

Denver, Colorado [RenewableEnergyAccess.com]

Construction on a $6.9 million solar park is expected to begin later this month at the Denver Federal Center (DFC) in Lakewood, Colorado. The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Rocky Mountain Region awarded the multi-million dollar contract to SunEdison for the design and construction of a 1 megawatt (MW) solar park this past spring.
